Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

The Emergency Medical Responder course prepares the EMR student to provide
prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical
conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency
medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMRs, anatomy and physiology,
medical emergencies, trauma, and special considerations for working in the prehospital
setting

In addition to this online learning course, you will be required to attend two skills ‘hands-on’ sessions as well as complete an AHA CPR Course.

Course Information

The course is tailored to meet Massachusetts regulations for first responders, specifically outlined in 105 CMR 171.000, AR 2-100, and Statewide EMS protocols.

Students will be prepared to respond effectively to a variety of emergencies in both field and workplace settings. Key topics include patient assessment, gaining access to patients, medical emergencies, respiratory emergencies, bleeding/wounds/shock, alcohol and drug overdose/toxicity, thermal injuries, head and trunk injuries, and skeletal injuries. The course also covers the use of epinephrine auto-injectors and naloxone.

This training is well-suited for Massachusetts firefighters, police officers, corrections officers, security personnel, camp counselors, childcare providers, workplace safety officers, and others in similar roles.
